It was a powerful night of Hip-Hop, R&B at the music for the 2011 Soul Train Awards. A lot of love and emotion could be seen in the building. There was a moving Heavy D tribute put on by Doug E. Fresh, Goodie M.O.B., Naughty By Nature, Whodini, Big Daddy Kane and Kurtis Blow.

The Time, Joe, Robin Thicke, Common, Kenny Lattimore, Dave Hollister, Freddie Jackson, Gladys Knight, Tamar Braxton, Chrisette Michele, Anthony Hamilton, BeBe Winans, Mary Mary, Natalie Cole, Cee Lo Green, Melanie Fiona, Lloyd, Eric Benet and Joe among others.

Sad! Man Killed Shortly After Being Freed For Murder He Didn’t Commit

A 23-year-old Bronx, N.Y. man who was acquitted of murder in March after spending 4 years behind bars for a crime he did not commit was fatally shot last Monday near his home, police say.

David Clarke, the ex-murder suspect released from Rikers Island in March after a jury overturned his 2007 murder conviction, was shot and killed in what his family described as a penny-ante neighborhood beef unrelated to his conviction.

“Four years in Rikers, to come here and die in eight months? Why would God do that? It’s not even fair,” cried his mother, Anne Smith. “He was 23 years old. How do you die at 23?”

How The Waffle House Became A Crime Mecca

All across the south a ton of criminals have one thing in common. They love themselves some Waffle House! Most recently DeAngelo Heard and Edwin Mitchell have been getting their dine and their crime on. Apparently these two have been accused of jacking Waffle Houses from Georgia to Alabama. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported:

“The MO in most of the robberies has been the same: The perpetrators appear to be two hungry men, placing a to-go order at the Waffle House counter in the early-morning hours. They order food, then sit and wait while the food is prepared.

But when the food is ready and it’s time to pay, one of the men pulls a gun and demands cash.”

These two got caught, but the crime wave won’t stop. The New York Times cites Waffle House as the place of choice for everything from fugitive pit stops, to terrorist attack meetings. A cross-dressing bank robber was recently seen getting his eat on at a Waffle House. Crime may not pay but it sure does make you hungry.

Kelly Thrasher, a spokeswoman for Waffle House told reporters:

“You can’t escape stereotypes. It’s not that more of these stories happen at Waffle Houses. It’s just getting more attention when it happens at a Waffle House.”

Why We Take Our Families For Granted On Thanksgiving

A few years ago, I was at my Aunt Bernie’s home for Thanksgiving. All the “usual suspects” were on hand and the meal, as usual, was fantastic. It’s a bit of a drive for us, and it was super cold outside, but it’s always worth the drive.

My aunt’s home is very nice. Among other things in the family, we have a huge tradition of making reading a priority. To say that my Aunt Bernie has a vast collection of books is an understatement. Bernie was like a second mother to me in my childhood. Her son Steve and I were like brothers growing up. We have a million stories to tell between getting in trouble with b.b. guns and playing stickball at the junior high on weekends. Bernie always cooked us cool meals, set us up for sleepovers, and was always willing to break out the belt (like that time we knocked over the coffee table while pillow fighting in the living room).

But time passes. People grow up and move away. Soon you almost take their existence for granted. But over time you lose the connection of knowing them the way you used to. You still feel close to them. But you are actually growing more distant.

I call this illusion of closeness “The Mosaic Effect.” They are family. We love them. But we are too close to see them as they fully are.

So imagine my shock, in looking through Aunt Bernie’s collection of books, when I saw a series on Tai Chi. I love martial arts culture deeply and the image of my aunt doing Tai Chi took her all outside of the frame of who my aunt is in my own minds eye.

I called to thank her for dinner a day or so after Thanksgiving, and I mentioned the books on Tai Chi I had found. “Oh yeah,” she said, alive with excitement. “I used to do Tai Chi all the time.” She quickly told me about how she liked it and all the benefits she got from it. I told her of my love for yoga and martial arts. It was a genuine family moment.

I realized how little I actually knew my aunt. I could make no assumptions about her on any level anymore. If she was into Tai Chi for all these years, what else didn’t I know about her? Was my passion for martial arts genetic? What else don’t I know about my other aunts, cousins and uncles?

So this Thanksgiving, I have some advice for you.

Take a step back from your usual surface conversations about the weather, who’s gonna win the Superbowl, and the time Uncle Reggie fell down the stairs trying to imitate Michael Jackson, and ask the relative sitting next to you a question about their life that truly engages them. I bet you’ll learn more about them and yourself than you ever expected. Don’t ask from a place of judgement. Ask from a place of love. I bet when you step back from the Mosaic Effect, you’ll love your family portrait. And tell me what you learned about someone you love in the comments below. See you after the holiday.

Washington Post Accused Of Pushing-Out Black Employees

The Washington Post is being accused of forcing out Black and Latino employees by one it’s own writers.

Fredrick Kunkle, co-chair of the Newspaper Guild unit at the Post, wrote in a memo Monday, “The Washington Post has pushed out — or is trying to push out — at least thirteen people through layoffs, coerced buyouts or outright dismissal on dubious charges,”

“What’s more troubling is that more than half of those employees are African-Americans or Latinos,” Kunkle wrote.

The script goes like this: an employee is summoned to a meeting where she hears that ‘the bar has been raised.’ She is told her work does not meet this supposed new standard. She is handed an envelope with a buyout offer and given a deadline to surrender her job or face disciplinary action because of her allegedly poor performance. She is reminded that disciplinary action progresses from warnings to suspensions and termination.

Five Things We’re Thankful For

By this time tomorrow, many of us will be smacking our lips and filling our bellies. We’ll have the freedom to go to church to celebrate Thanksgiving, or not. And, if we want to take a YouTube jab at an elected official we don’t care for, we’ll be able to do that, too. But too many of us, here in the U.S. and abroad, will not have such luxuries.

For that reason, we at NewsOne have a few things for you to consider being thankful for less than 24 hours from now.

The 99 Percent

You may think these masses of people occupying parks and city spaces are annoying and shortsighted. But we are the nation that, back in 1773, told England to take their taxed tea and shove it! We are the America of Susan B. Anthony who demanded equal rights for women. Then there was the young man named Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. who challenged the powers that be. The 99 percent, love them or hate them, you cannot hate on their protest hustle.

Immigration

Not only did immigration diversify our nation, it brought us a young student who later met young white lady from the Jayhawk State who, together, gave birth to our 44th President, Barack Hussein Obama.

Who ever thought the dashing young man in this video would be President? The part at the end when he says, “I’m Barack Obama” was a sign that this Harvard Law Grad was headed to the White House.

A Roof Over Your Head

According to the National Coalition for the Homeless website, 3.5 million Americans experience homelessness every year. Be thankful you are not of them.

The Turkey On Your Table

925 million of our fellow citizens worldwide do not have enough to eat and 98 percent of them live in developing nations, according to the World Food Programme. One in four African Americans lives below the federal poverty line and more than 26 percent of Latino households struggle to put food on the table according to the Washington, D.C.-based Bread for the World Institute.

Friends and Family

Despite how gloomy the economy is and your struggles to live day to day are, take tomorrow off and be thankful for those around you. Even if you have to eat at a church or a mosque because you cannot afford to buy your own bird, be glad for that. Be they your blood relatives or folks who care enough to call you friend, be thankful you have someone to share this very American holiday with.

Chicago Teen Charged In Taped Attack On Elderly Man

A teen has been charged with aggravated battery for a videotaped attack of an elderly man in a Chicago subway station.

Scotty Strahan, 18, turned himself in to the police after authorities issued alerts seeking his arrest.

Video posted at worldstarhiphop.com shows the elderly man in a tan jacket wandering around passengers on the CTA platform. In the video, a group of teens is seen laughing and taunting the older man. One teen, dressed in a black vest and hoodie, begins following the older man as the train approaches.

FAMU Band Shut Down After Student’s Sudden Death

The president of Florida A&M University has announced Tuesday he will be suspending the school’s famous Marching 100 band until investigators establish what led to a member’s death last weekend.

Speaking at a press conference at the university earlier today, James Ammons, said the school has formed an independent task force to examine the death of Robert Champion. The panel would try to “determine if there are patterns of inappropriate behavior within the culture of the band,” Ammons said, amid rumors of hazing as a possible factor in Champion’s death.

The 26-year-old, an Atlanta native, was found unconscious on Saturday night by Orlando paramedics aboard a parked charter bus in front of the Rosen Plaza. He was transported to a nearby hospital and later pronounced dead.

A New Calling! Dr. Cornel West To Leave Princeton This Summer

Dr. Cornel West will resign from his position at Princeton University this coming summer to return to Union Theological Seminary in New York City, where he started out as an assistant professor in 1977.

West will teach philosophy and Christian practices at Union and will take a significant reduction in pay, he told the Times.

“I don’t have that much time, and I want to be able to do precisely what I’m called to do,” Dr. West, 58, said. It will also be nice, he said, to be within walking distance of the Apollo Theater.

Reggie Love, President Barack Obama’s personal assistant and “First Brother” is resigning his position to attend business school the University Of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School Of Business.

Love, who played basketball for Duke University has been working for Obama since 2006 when he was a senator.

ABC News reports:

Love said he felt fortunate to be a “very long passenger on an amazing ride.” But it’s the mundane things about the job he will cherish most. On most nights, as Obama leaves the Oval Office for the second-floor residence, he pops his head into Love’s office for a quick briefing on the next day’s schedule and then says goodnight.

“I know definitely I’m going to miss that,” Love said. “He’s been like big brother to me, a mentor. I’ve learned so much about life from him. I’ve spent most of my adult life working for him, so it’s going to be a challenge. A pretty big challenge.”
