(HUMBLE, TX) — A local church is taking its fight against HIV/AIDS to another level.

St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church of Humble better known as “The Luke” will spend this Sunday’s service talking HIV/AIDS, Pastor Timothy Sloan says.

NEWS 92 FM’s Carolyn Campbell reports:

The Latest News Headlines, Traffic and Weather:

The black church has HIV/AIDS. Its in the pulpit, it’s in the pews, it’s in the churches and it has to be dealt with,” Sloan said. “We take off the blinders and pull our heads out of the sand, and we confront this issue head on.”

This is the third year “The Luke” has partnered with the NAACP, joining churches around the nation for a day of unity to address the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

But at The Luke, the fight is year around. Annual rapid AIDS testing is offered during worship services, and Pastor Sloan is first in line.

“I was quite concerned that there would be some backlash,” Sloan said, “but they, in fact, embraced it.”

Now, The Luke is sending six of its members to help in a township in South Africa where about a fourth of the population is infected with HIV and AIDS.
