As a Christmas present a man decides to build a 40-foot train as a gift to the children who visit Donovan Park in the Heights… and then gets fired for it.
The problem was Paul Carr of Houston didn’t get clearance to do and so now not only is he out $4500, he’s also out of a job.
Carr a former fire fighter and three-time president of the Houston Heights Association was caught off guard of the termination.
According to the Houston Chronicle, “Shortly after the start of the new year, he was told he was fired from his job as caretaker of Donovan Park and nearby Marmion Park because he didn’t ask permission to build the train.”
His heart is clearly in the right place, but the HHA feels differently. No one should have the right ignore the rules and do as they please, and this is how the association feels about Mr. Carr.
The Houston Chronicle also reports that Carr went on record to say he deliberately kept the train a secret, “”There are reasons it had to be done that way…to have sold them on building something out of wood and putting it in the park here would have been a little difficult, probably. But everybody likes it now.”
Though parents and children who visit the park love the train, there will be no official thank you sent out to Carr. The only form of gratitude to console him will be the smiling faces on the children playing on his train.
