locks-of-love-3San Jacinto College is abuzz with a good cause. For the month of April, a stop by the cosmetology school means you get a free haircut and a child gets an invaluable donation. If your hair is at least 10 inches and not bleached, you can donate to Locks of Love.

For a year and a half, Dora Martin avoided haircuts. “I knew I wanted to help so I grew my hair just for that reason.” She donated 12 inches of her long locks. With a flip of the cape and a glance in the mirror, she emerged with a striking style and a smile of satisfaction. She hopes to pass that smile on to the child who will be receiving her donation.

Wielding the scissors was student Chelsea Stewart. She found with each client she learns something knew. But in this case, she is also able to help others. “One woman that came in just started crying because it was so emotional for her to be able to do that for somebody else,” Stewart shared.

Perhaps the most courageous was Sharon Finney, who had not sported a short coiffure in 47 years. “My nephew inspired me,” Finney said. “He has grown his hair out twice and donated.” She was visibly nervous but was determined to donate. “We’ve had some deaths in our family due to cancer and so I know this is important for a little girl or a child to have their hair.”
