American Red Cross volunteers gathered at a North Houston church Wednesday afternoon. More than 90 volunteers were packed and ready to mobilize to Louisiana to help victims of Hurricane Isaac.

The volunteers were tasked to quickly set up shelters as soon as they get the all clear.

Among this group is Doug Scarlett, who got a push into volunteering from President Lyndon Baines Johnson in 1965:”I was his chef on Air Force One and he asked me what I do when I’m not on the airplane and I said I’m bored, Scarlett said.

He also said that he began working with the American Red Cross training first aid at National.

Scarlett is now a caterer in Tennessee. He does not let a year go by in which he does not lend volunteer efforts to the American Red Cross.
