Forty-nine people whose headless, handless bodies were recovered early Sunday on a highway near the town of Cadereyta is indeed one notable massacre. The group taking credit for that massacre is the Zetas Drug Cartel. Officials are blaming the infamous cartel for the massacre and took note of a message that the gang reportedly left near the decapitated bodies. The message’s content was not disclosed.

The bodies of the individuals were not only decapitated but the hands of the victims were cut off. Lack of a head or fingers will make it difficult to identify the corpses. The bodies were that of 43 men and six women and were dumped about 2:00 a.m. Sunday morning. Monterrey and the surrounding areas of the industrial town in Mexico are home to some 4 million people. The area has also become a crucial point of entry for gangs and gang violence, which is to blame for more than 50,000 deaths since President Felipe Calderon deployed federal forces against Mexico’s powerful gangs. President Calderon took office in December 2006.
