Northwoods Pediatric Center in Spring reopened Friday, days after a woman was shot to death in the parking lot; her newborn son was then kidnapped.

Twenty-eight-year-old Kala Golden Schuchardt was gunned down while leaving the medical facility. She was there for a medical check-up for her newborn son Keegan. Several flowers, balloons and cards were left at the site as part of a makeshift memorial to Schuchardt.

Verna Deann McClain, 31, has been charged with capital murder. She allegedly shot Schuchardt dead in the parking lot of the pediatric center. She then grabbed Schuchardt’s baby and drove off, kidnapping the new born. Police were able to track her down at a nearby apartment complex. McClain, who made her first court appearance on Thursday, was assigned two attorneys. She is being held without bond.

Published reports indicate that McClain will have a bond hearing on Monday and is currently under suicide watch in her single cell in the Montgomery County Jail. According to Montgomery County sheriff’s deputies, McClain did not know Schuchardt and fatally shot the mother at random. McClain was planning to take Schuchardt’s new born baby boy as her own; McClain recently suffered a miscarriage.

The baby was later found safe and sound around 8 p.m. Tuesday. Additional reports indicate that Kala Marie Golden Schuchardt was also the mother of a two-year-old and a four-year-old son. Schuchardt’s funeral has been set for 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church, 12177 Interstate 45 in Willis
