The Cumberland River is receding in swamped Nashville, Tennessee, but Music City faces a long recovery from the historic flooding.

The floods left landmarks, homes and businesses underwater in the country music capital.

At least 27 deaths were blamed on flooding in the Southeast, 18 of them in Tennessee. And 10 of those Tennessee deaths occurred in Davidson County including Nashville, authorities said.

The office of Nashville Mayor Karl Dean said Tuesday that the Cumberland, which runs through downtown, is expected to be below flood level by the end of the week.

Shelters remain open, and residents are being urged to check on elderly neighbors who may need help.

Floodwaters swamped a U.S. Navy base in Millington, Tennessee, and affected a large part of its operations, a base spokesman said Tuesday.
